.swfSaver FAQ

Q: What is a cache?

What is a cache? It’s a folder on your computer that web browsers use to speed up your web surfing. When you visit a site, your browser places the files from that site in your cache and displays that file instead of downloading the same files and images from the web server when you visit the same site again. The cache list in .swfSaver shows all the .swf (flash) files currently in your Internet Explorer cache. Since the content of the cache folder changes when you use IE for viewing web pages (it can only hold so many files), the cache list in .swfSaver will change as well.

Q: Why doesn’t this work with Firefox / Opera / any other browser than Internet Explorer?

A: All browsers handle their cache differently. We focus on IE because it has the largest market share now and the cache is not user specific.

Q: Will .swfSaver support other browsers in the future?

A: If enough users request it, it’s something that might be viable for us.

Q: I want to use image files in my screensaver as well as flash files!

A: Right now .swfSaver lives up to it's name and only displays flash files. If enough users want image files to be available, it's something we will consider adding to .swfSaver.

Q: Why does it take so long to start up?

A: When .swfSaver starts up it goes through your Internet Explorer cache and searches for the .swf files located in it and then writes them to a database. Depending on your computer speed this will take a few seconds.

Q: I don’t understand how the timer works!

A: The timer will play each .swf file in your playlist for the exact amount of seconds that you set it to. So if you have 5 items in your playlist and set your timer to 10 seconds, it will play each file, in order from top to bottom, for 10 seconds each before moving on to the next file. Please note that setting the timer to 0 (zero) turns the timer off.

Q: Do I need to be connected to the internet to use this?

A: Both yes and no. Since .swfSaver is designed to collect the .swf files you see while you surf the web it would help if you actually surfed the web. But you can run .swfSaver offline with no problem as long as you have some .swf files on your computer that it can display.

Q: My swf file I have in my playlist keeps stopping. Why?

A: Authors of flash files sometimes puts in a stop in the programming at the end of the flash file if the movie is not supposed to loop. To alleviate this problem there is a "loop" checkbox in the options in the advanced mode. This checkbox will be cleared automatically if there is more than one .swf file in your playlist as swfSaver would loop the first .swf file your playlist over and over again if the loop was checked.

Q: Where do I get really cool .swf files?

A: All over the internet! There’s millions of .swf files out there that can be used by you now. Some of our favorite locations to get material for .swfSaver are:
